Sany Introduces Electric Forklifts to South African Material Handling

Amidst the global logistics, warehousing, port, and manufacturing sectors' accelerated efforts to reduce operational costs and emissions, electric forklifts are transitioning from traditional indoor storage equipment to more demanding industrial scenarios. Recently, South Africa's General Heavy Marine (GHM) announced the local launch of the new Sany electric forklift series from China, providing South African enterprises with electric material handling solutions that cover light to medium and larger tonnage operation needs. This release is not only a supplement to a single product line but also reflects the rising demand in South Africa's industrial equipment market for low-emission, high-efficiency, and localized service guarantees.
South Africa's General Heavy Marine is a port and material handling equipment service provider based in the Jet Park area of Boksburg, Gauteng, near Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport. Established in 2010, the company's core business includes container handling equipment, material handling equipment, forklifts, reach stackers, empty container stackers, telescopic forklifts, and related industrial equipment services. Currently, GHM has branches in Durban and Cape Town, with service coverage in Richards Bay, East London, Port Elizabeth, Saldanha Bay, Bloemfontein, and Northern Cape, while also extending its business to Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia. The newly introduced Sany electric forklift series from China targets logistics companies, warehouses, ports, manufacturing plants, and distribution centers, among various application scenarios. Founded in 1989, Sany Group is a global construction machinery and high-end equipment manufacturing enterprise, with business covering excavating machinery, lifting machinery, concrete machinery, road machinery, port equipment, vehicles, and new energy equipment. In recent years, Sany has been continuously expanding in the directions of electrification, digitalization, and intelligence, with its electric forklift product line becoming an important part of its material handling and smart logistics layout.
In June, Sany electric forklifts were showcased at the South African Infrastructure Exhibition held in Johannesburg, South Africa.
From a product configuration perspective, the Sany electric forklift series introduced by GHM covers models from 2 to 8 tons, with a standard lifting height starting from 3 meters, and can be adapted to various working conditions through different mast configurations. This series features a high-voltage lithium battery system, emphasizing acceleration performance, lifting capacity, and driving efficiency, with a top driving speed exceeding 22 kilometers per hour and a motor efficiency of over 94%. Compared to traditional diesel or LPG forklifts, electric forklifts have significant advantages in terms of exhaust emissions, noise control, maintenance frequency, and energy consumption costs, making them particularly suitable for users with higher requirements for working environments, equipment availability, and total cost of ownership.
Charging efficiency is a core concern when enterprises introduce electric equipment. According to the release information, Sany's electric forklift series can be fully charged in about 1 hour and can provide up to 8 hours of operating time under normal conditions. This means that they are not only suitable for single-shift warehouse operations but also have the potential to support multi-shift operations. The lithium battery system also reduces the maintenance steps of traditional lead-acid batteries, helping to reduce downtime and increase the overall availability of the fleet.
In terms of adaptability to complex working conditions, this series is not limited to indoor logistics environments. The products can operate in a temperature range of -30°C to 50°C, with a climbing ability of over 20%, making them suitable for logistics yards, manufacturing bases, ports, and heavy industrial scenarios. For example, the SCP40C6 model has a rated lifting capacity of 4 tons, a standard lifting height of 3 meters, a turning radius of 2450 millimeters, and is equipped with a 40.8kWh battery system; the SCP50C6 increases the lifting capacity to 5 tons while maintaining good mobility and operational efficiency.
Intelligence is also one of the focuses of this product launch. The series can integrate cloud connectivity functions, supporting remote monitoring, fault diagnosis, OTA software upgrades, vehicle locking, driver identity recognition, and operation status tracking. Some configurations also support a 360° vision system and active safety protection functions. These features allow fleet managers to have a clearer grasp of equipment usage, optimize maintenance plans, and enhance on-site safety management levels.
