Komatsu Intelligent Construction Deployed at Singapore Changi Airport T5

Recently, Komatsu announced the official implementation of its construction management digital solution "Smart Construction®" in the construction project of Singapore Changi Airport's Terminal 5. This marks the first large-scale deployment of the solution in Singapore—where previously ICT construction and digital management were still in the "pilot" and "exploration" stages. Now, Komatsu has brought its entire digital construction system to a super construction site with an annual passenger throughput of 50 million.

This signal is worth the serious attention of the entire construction machinery industry.

Solving more than just precision issues

Looking at the project itself, Changi Airport's Terminal 5 is an ultra-large development project, with a total development area of 1080 hectares and an annual passenger capacity of 50 million people after completion, which can be expanded to 70 million in the long term. The overall scale exceeds the sum of the existing Terminals 1-4, and the project spans from 2025 to the mid-2030s. The project poses extremely high requirements for construction precision, multi-device collaboration, and full-process progress control, making it an ideal large-scale test field for Komatsu's entire digital construction technology.

For this project, Komatsu will deploy 3D machine guidance systems, 3D flexible machine guidance systems, and Smart Construction data dashboards, among other cutting-edge digital tools.

The 3D machine guidance system relies on GNSS satellite positioning and on-board sensors to link the three-dimensional design model with the real-time location of the equipment, directly assisting operators in precise operations, and enhancing construction precision from the source; the upgraded 3D flexible machine guidance system breaks through model restrictions, allowing for rapid adaptation to various types of equipment such as excavators and bulldozers, meeting the differentiated construction needs of different sites; the Smart Construction data dashboard acts as a data hub, visualizing the entire project's workload, equipment status, and construction progress, breaking down data barriers between project owners, contractors, and equipment managers, thereby shortening the project decision-making chain.

Simply put: machinery knows where it is, what it should do, and how well it is doing; managers know what is happening on-site, where the progress is, and where adjustments are needed. Real-time information flow replaces the wait for layer-by-layer reporting, and the speed and precision of on-site decision-making have been significantly improved.

The reason this implementation is worth paying attention to is not only the technology itself but also the evolution of Komatsu's strategic logic behind it.

In its press release, Komatsu mentioned a set of data: globally, Komatsu has delivered over 9000 3D machine guidance systems, and the global shipment of ICT intelligent construction machinery equipped with Intelligent Machine Control (iMC) has exceeded 22,000 units. This vast base of installed equipment means that Komatsu has accumulated a considerable scale of installed machinery and operational data in the field of construction digitalization. The value of data lies in the fact that the more it is used, the more accurate the algorithms become, and the more mature the solutions are, which in turn lowers the cost and barriers for subsequent deployments, providing a hardware foundation for the rapid replication of the "Smart Construction®" solution in more projects.

What is even more noteworthy is that less than a month before the announcement of the Changi Airport project, Komatsu just announced a comprehensive upgrade to its multi-stage global AI deployment architecture that has been progressing for many years, scaling up AI technology applications in R&D, production, sales, and after-sales across the entire value chain.
