China Accelerates Modern Water Network Construction

August 06,2026

This year, China has been fully accelerating the construction of a modern water network, with water conservancy construction investment maintaining a high level, and the overall start has been good.

From January to June 2026, the country implemented 33,000 water conservancy projects, completing water conservancy construction investment of 515.1 billion yuan. A batch of major projects such as the Beibu Gulf water resource allocation, and the Yellow River Guyuan water hub, which are part of the backbone conveyance and drainage channels and important regulation nodes of the national water network, are being accelerated in construction.

At the construction site of the South-to-North Water Diversion follow-up project - the Yangtze River to Han River Diversion Project, 8 hard rock tunnel boring machines are working synchronously, with the main water conveyance tunnel advancing a total of over 31 kilometers.

Focusing on the implementation of a new round of grain production capacity enhancement projects, a batch of large and medium-sized irrigation areas such as the Guangdong Leizhou Peninsula Irrigation District and the Anhui Pi Shihang Irrigation District modernization projects have started construction. From January to June, the country started 25 major water conservancy projects, including the Three Gorges new waterway channel and the Liaoning Eastern Peninsula water resource allocation, which is 11 more than the same period last year.

At the same time, China is scientifically planning the construction of reservoirs, river channels and embankments, and flood detention areas based on river basins, and the construction of flood prevention and drainage systems in river basins is being accelerated.

The Menghe Shuangxu Reservoir is a major water conservancy project in the comprehensive plan of the Huai River Basin. At the construction site, machinery and construction personnel are carrying out concrete pouring operations for the main body of the bridgehead fort and the hoisting and closing machine room through multi-point collaborative operations.

Currently, out of the 40 backbone conveyance and drainage channels planned and constructed in the national water network, 35 have been built or are under construction, and out of the 588 important regulation nodes planned and constructed, 473 have been built or are under construction.
