Cummins Launches S29 Engine, Injecting Strong Power into Global Mining Applicati
October 31,2026
On October 28, 2026, Cummins, a global pioneer in power technology, officially launched the highly anticipated S29 mining engine. The launch event was held at Chongqing Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. This is another important milestone for the product since Cummins first disclosed S29-related information at its May 2026 Analyst Day.
The S29 is an all-new 29-liter engine platform developed from the ground up, built for 90–120-tonne mining dump trucks and 150–220-tonne excavators, while also widely applicable to surface mining machines, dozers, wheel loaders, dewatering pumps and other mining and industrial equipment. The engine is planned to supply global markets starting mid-2027.
Today we are launching not just a brand-new engine, but a new benchmark for mining power. The Cummins S29 brings together multiple innovations in fuel economy, reliability and high power density, delivering strong power to customers through excellent performance, better total cost of ownership across the lifecycle and future-oriented flexibility.

President of the Power Systems Segment

The S29 delivers outstanding power density, with maximum output of up to 1,300 horsepower (2,100 rpm, intermittent power; final parameters subject to validation and certification). With its compact installation size, the S29 provides power and performance comparable to larger-displacement engines, bringing greater flexibility to vehicle integration. At launch, the S29 is planned to meet China's Stage III non-road mobile machinery emission certification and reach a level comparable to U.S. EPA Tier 2.
Fuel efficiency was a key consideration in S29's development. Under current development targets, in specific operating conditions the S29's minimum brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is expected to be as low as 180 g/kWh, promising industry-leading fuel economy in its power range and helping customers lower operating costs.
Another highlight of the S29 is its multi-fuel compatibility, flexibly supporting customers' evolving fuel strategies. At launch, the engine is planned to be compatible with diesel, paraffinic fuels meeting the EN 15940 standard (such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, HVO), and B50 biodiesel blends. The platform also reserves expansion space for future natural gas, hydrogen or dual-fuel configurations.
The S29 is also developed for the harsh operating environments of high-altitude and remote mining areas, maintaining full power without derating at altitudes up to 3,000 meters, and achieving cold starts without auxiliary preheating in environments as low as -25°C.
Mining customers continuously face multiple pressures — increasing material transport capacity, lowering operating costs and improving efficiency. We are glad to bring customers a new generation of mining power through the S29. Purpose-built for mining applications, this platform is designed to help customers turn those pressures into higher productivity and profitability.

The S29 will be manufactured at Chongqing Cummins. As Cummins' only high-horsepower engine smart-manufacturing base in China, Chongqing Cummins will leverage its local smart manufacturing, mature production system and professional talent to strengthen control across the entire production process, continuously ensuring product quality and consistency, and providing reliable manufacturing and delivery assurance for the S29 to serve global markets.
The S29, made in Chongqing and serving the world, is a vivid example of Cummins' rooted-local, connected-global approach. Innovation earns attention; excellent delivery earns lasting trust. The success of the S29 will be measured not only by today's debut, but by whether it can continuously improve productivity in real operation, withstand the test of time with reliable performance, and create long-term value for customers and local communities.
