Recently, two key research and development projects undertaken by Taiyuan Heavy Industry have successfully passed the acceptance review, with both projects focusing on the same keyword: high-performance materials.
In the field of major equipment, the material limits often determine the product limits. As the national strategic emphasis on key core components continues to increase, high-performance materials have become a key factor in determining product competitiveness. At the production front of Taiyuan Heavy Industry's thermal processing manufacturing, the expert group conducted on-site inspections of the project outcomes, using operational data and application conditions to verify the quality of these "high-performance materials".
What has Taiyuan Heavy Industry done? And what are the results? The answers are written on the key components of two "heavy machines".
The crawler shoes and bucket teeth of electric shovels are the parts that endure the most severe impacts and wear. The challenge of making them both "durable" and "lightweight and wear-resistant" is a demanding one. Taiyuan Heavy Industry's team tackled this problem from multiple dimensions, including design, smelting, and casting, developing a new type of high-performance lightweight wear-resistant steel that successfully achieved weight reduction and strength enhancement for these components. Now, electric shovels equipped with new crawler shoes and bucket teeth have been steadily operating in numerous mines in Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, and other locations.
The high-speed rotor is the "main artery" of the steam turbine generator set. Although it is large in size, it is a precision component through and through. Taiyuan Heavy Industry's team aimed to create a rotor that is "uniform in both appearance and substance". From precisely controlling the steel composition during smelting, to completely eliminating internal cavities through forging, to achieving millimeter-accurate deep groove processing—Taiyuan Heavy Industry's team used a set of meticulous skills, akin to "embroidery needles", to manufacture pure and homogeneous high-performance rotors, which have been successfully applied to several large-scale units in the country, with significant operational results.
