China's machinery exports beat national trade growth for 47 months

Multiple Drivers Underscore Machinery’s Role as the “Ballast” of Foreign Trade
Latest data show that in the first seven months of this year, China’s machinery industry exported a cumulative US$664.3 billion, up 20.8% year on year and 2.3 percentage points faster than the country’s overall foreign-trade growth. Machinery exports accounted for 26.3% of national goods-trade exports, firmly cementing the sector’s role as the “ballast stone” of foreign trade. Order books at companies also point to ample growth momentum.

Experts note that China’s strong machinery export figures rest on three core supports:
First, the green transition of global infrastructure is unlocking sustained, solid demand for equipment. Overseas mines, ports, and new-energy power stations are rapidly expanding procurement of low-carbon, heavy-duty machinery.
Second, the machinery industry’s long-term technology build-up is paying off. High-end equipment now matches international first-tier brands in performance while offering stronger adaptability.
Third, years of investment in global R&D, manufacturing, and service networks are taking hold. Stronger localized service capabilities are making Chinese machinery more acceptable to overseas customers.

Breakthroughs on Multiple Fronts and Structural Optimization Reveal Three New Features
Unlike the previous export model that relied on selling large volumes of low- and mid-range products, this year’s machinery exports show a clear transformation in market coverage, industry structure, and product mix. A more diversified and deeper growth pattern is taking shape.
Experts say the latest industry data reveal three new characteristics. The first is wider geographic reach. Chinese machinery products now serve more than 230 countries and regions, becoming deeply integrated into global industrial and supply chains. CRCHI won the bid for the Gyeonggi-do cable-tunnel project in South Korea, and SDLG shipped high-end bulldozers in batches to Indonesia and Central Asia.

The second feature is broad-based growth across pillar industries, with new momentum building. The five sectors—electrical equipment, automotive, petrochemical and general machinery, construction machinery, and mechanical basic parts—together account for more than 70% of exports. All 14 sub-sectors posted positive year-on-year export growth, with nine growing by more than 10%. Electrical equipment, automotive, and construction machinery have all maintained double-digit growth for more than 13 consecutive months.
In addition, China’s machinery product mix is accelerating toward the high end. Vehicle exports rose 56.5% in value, while electric passenger vehicle exports grew more than 70% in both volume and value. High-tech, high-value-added products are becoming the core driver of export growth.
“Three Transformations” Light a New Path for Going Global
The shift from selling individual machines to exporting complete green solutions, and from competing on price to competing on full-lifecycle technical service, is a new bright spot for China’s machinery exports. It reflects the concentrated release of new quality productive forces in the global market and contributes Chinese equipment strength to worldwide industrial green upgrading.

As the machinery industry’s value-added continues to rise, domestic machinery companies are also seeing higher overseas profitability. Zoomlion’s overseas revenue this year accounts for nearly 60% of total revenue, and overseas gross margins are better than domestic ones. The company has upgraded from exporting single machines to providing complete equipment packages and full-lifecycle operation and maintenance services.
Experts say these concrete cases show that, by relying on the core competitiveness built through new quality productive forces, China’s machinery industry is reshaping the global division of labor in equipment manufacturing and giving global industrial and supply chains greater resilience.

Ye Dingda, Vice Chairman of the China Machinery Industry Federation: The export highlights are not simply bigger numbers; they reflect a qualitative transformation of the entire industry. Our equipment not only brings low-carbon, efficient solutions to global users, but also shares the practical experience accumulated through technological iteration with the rest of the world. This is an important contribution by Chinese manufacturing to global industrial upgrading.
