Luck Stone Teams Up with Caterpillar to Expand Automated Hauling Solutions

October 10,2026

Following more than 18 months of successful automated transport at Luck Stone's Bull Run quarry, Luck Stone and Caterpillar have announced they will extend the technology to two more quarries in Virginia. The expansion builds on the outstanding results already achieved at Bull Run.

Quarry and aggregate operators face persistent challenges — keeping production steady across shifts, continuously improving safety, and attracting and developing talent in a competitive environment.

For Luck Stone, the greatest value of technology lies in helping people reach their full potential while building a safer, more consistent operating environment. That is why the company has been seeking a partner that advances automation innovation with people at the center.

Through close collaboration in development and deployment, Luck Stone has truly experienced the value of Caterpillar's approach of combining technology, people and process. It not only improves safety and consistency of operations but also creates new opportunities for employees to learn skills and move into technology-based roles.

Travis Chewning, Luck Stone's Vice President of Engineering and Operational Support, said:

At Luck Stone we have always believed innovation should unleash human potential. Automation is helping us build a safer workplace, deliver more consistent service to customers, and give employees opportunities to develop new skills for an evolving industry. Our work with Caterpillar has helped us achieve that, and we look forward to building on the experience gained at Bull Run.

Denise Johnson, President of Caterpillar's Resource Industries Group, said:

Caterpillar's mission is to help customers solve their toughest challenges, and customers like Luck Stone play an important role in advancing solutions across the industry. Through close collaboration we gain valuable insights that help us continuously refine and scale automated transport solutions, creating quantifiable value in both operations and talent development. This expansion shows how strong customer partnerships accelerate innovation and take proven solutions to more job sites worldwide.

The expansion project is supported by Caterpillar and implemented with help from local Cat® dealer Carter Machinery. Caterpillar's automated transport technology will be deployed on two Cat® 775 truck fleets at the Boscobel and Bealeton quarries, alongside complementary technologies supporting loaders and other on-site equipment.

This is also Caterpillar's first deployment of automated transport on the Cat 775 — an important haul truck in the quarry sector.

Luck Stone's expansion is Caterpillar's latest milestone in quarry automation. To date, Caterpillar's autonomous trucks have moved over 13 billion tonnes of material and traveled safely more than 455 million kilometers, with no reported personnel injuries throughout operations.
