Liugong's First Hydrogen Wheel Loader Enters Field Testing
In early October, Liugong's first hydrogen wheel loader, the 856TE FCEV, was officially delivered and entered the field-testing phase at a customer's site. This deployment marks Liugong's completion of its full new-energy map for wheel loaders, achieving 'one chassis, multiple power options' on the 5-ton platform.
At the same time, as an industry leader in wheel loaders looking toward the long-term dual-carbon goal, Liugong is building up frontier powertrain technology ahead of time, accumulating actionable heavy-duty equipment engineering experience for the green transition of China's bulk-material industry, and driving technological iteration in the hydrogen construction-machinery segment.
Zero-Carbon Hydrogen Power — A Step Toward Global Green Industry
The global energy transition is moving toward a truly green, renewable-energy era, and hydrogen is regarded as a relatively economical and effective renewable energy. Its combustion product is only water, with zero carbon emissions at the combustion stage, earning it the name of ultimate eco-friendly energy.
More importantly, hydrogen has extremely high energy density, making it key to solving the intermittency of wind and solar power, and enabling large-scale, long-duration energy storage.
At the same time, hydrogen sources are very broad, whether from renewable-energy electrolysis or industrial by-product hydrogen, providing a stable hydrogen supply.
Core Advantages of the Hydrogen Wheel Loader
Today there are two hydrogen application paths — hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen internal combustion engines. The Liugong 856TE FCEV is a new-energy wheel loader powered by a hydrogen fuel cell as its core power source. Choosing the fuel-cell route is not chasing a tech trend, but responding to the real needs of heavy-duty working conditions.
Hydrogen equipment combines the range and refueling advantages of traditional fuel vehicles with strong environmental adaptability, while also delivering the zero-carbon attributes of pure-electric equipment, offering a new energy alternative for specific conditions with stable refueling and fixed sites.
Fast Refueling: It inherits the fast refueling, multi-shift continuous operation and low-temperature stability of fuel equipment. A rapid hydrogen fill takes only 10–15 minutes, and a full tank supports over 10 hours of continuous operation, completely removing refueling anxiety.
Zero-Carbon Environmental Protection: It also shares the zero-pollutant-emission trait of pure-electric equipment; the electrochemical reaction produces only water, fitting enclosed-plant environmental requirements.
Unbothered by Severe Cold: With low-temperature cold-start technology, it starts quickly and runs stably even at -30°C extreme cold.
Safe and Stable: Addressing the safety risk of hydrogen's flammability, Liugong equips multiple safety protection systems to ensure stable and reliable operation.
Heavy-Duty Strength: It continues Liugong's hardcore 5-ton heavy-duty capability. With 180 kW total power for quick, strong response, and a maximum breakout force of 185 kN, digging and loading efficiency is greatly boosted.

The deployment of this 856TE FCEV — combining continuous attendance, low-temperature stability and zero emissions — marks Liugong completing the last piece of its heavy-duty powertrain puzzle.
Multiple Technology Routes Developed in Parallel, Building a Diverse Powertrain Matrix
Six decades of wheel-loader expertise and twelve years of electrification exploration. As an industry pioneer in electro-intelligence, Liugong's new-energy strategy pursues multiple technology routes in coordination — from pure electric, hybrid and battery-swap to hydrogen fuel — meeting complex working conditions with diverse power, and shouldering the green responsibility of a major industrial power through continuous technological innovation.
In 1966, Liugong developed its first wheel loader, the Z435.
In 2019, Liugong launched...
